I discussed that a vasectomy does not make him sterile however he does prevent sperm from joining with his ejaculation fluid. I informed him that in accordance with the American Urological Association guidelines (2012, amended 2015), the vasectomy is intended to be a permanent form of contraception. Additionally, I informed him it does not produce immediate sterility and requires another form of contraception until a post-vasectomy confirmatory semen analysis can be obtained. According to the guidelines, the risk of pregnancy after vasectomy is approximately 1 in 2000 men and he may require a repeat procedure. I also discussed potential complications including hematom
